A Minnesota company is helping create COVID-19 tests that will help experts better understand the disease.
According to a release from SkyWater Technology, it’s partnering with a global genomics platform to respond to this coronavirus pandemic.
“As concerns rise about the coronavirus global pandemic, the pressure is on to enable even faster, more accessible testing.” Thomas Sonderman, president of SkyWater, stated in the release.
“We are pleased to be working with genomics leader MGI and playing a role as a U.S. manufacturer in cutting-edge technology solutions that are making an important contribution to the detection of COVID-19.”

SkyWater has a couple of locations: one in California and the other in Bloomington. It’s creating a component to help manufacture a COVID-19 testing process.
“There’s a rapid test that typically gets done, that’s the swabbing the DNA swabbing, that allows for a quick-turn test to determine whether someone has a positive indication. That patient would then be further diagnosed through this platform,” Sonderman told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS during a video conference.
By further diagnosing a patient, experts will be able to understand the disease better and will help them learn how to defend against it.
“It’s part of a comprehensive system that is used to really do a deeper dive into signals that a particular patient may have been affected [by],” Sonderman added.
This process has been shared around the world, and according to Sonderman, it will also help in the U.S.
