Hmong man claims Indiana hotels discriminated against him amid coronavirus anxiety

A man was turned away from two different hotels in Indiana, and he says it was because of his Asian heritage.

Kao Lor, who’s of Hmong descent, posted videos to Facebook detailing his interactions, first at a Super 8 and later at a Days Inn down the road in Plymouth, Indiana.

In one of the videos, a desk attendant says, "We have coronavirus going around, and anyone from China, I’m told, has to be picked up and quarantined for two weeks."

Desk attendants at both hotels claimed it was company policy to reject anyone who appeared to be from China.

Wyndham Hotels, which owns both Super 8 and Days Inn, said in a statement that no such policy existed and that the company was trying to apologize to Lor:

"We’re deeply troubled by these incidents as they’re not reflective our values or our expectations of franchisees. While these locations are individually owned and operated, it’s important to note that the ‘corporate policy’ referenced in the video does not exist. Please know we’re treating this matter seriously and are addressing with the owners of both hotels. We’re also working to reach out to this guest to offer our sincere apologies and will be extending a gesture of goodwill to help make things right."
