2 new flu-related hospitalizations, 10 new school outbreaks
Two new influenza-related hospitalizations were reported by the Minnesota Department of Health.
MDH’s weekly flu report for last week notes two new hospitalizations, down from three the previous week. A total of 12 flu-related hospitalizations have now been reported in the state this season.
Additionally, 10 new school outbreaks were reported last week, up from six the previous week. A total of 41 school outbreaks — which is when the number of students absent with flu-like illnesses reaches 5% of total enrollment — have now been reported this season.
Also, one new long-term care center outbreak was reported, bringing the total number for the season to three.
The good news is no new flu-related deaths were reported last week, keeping the total for the season at two.
MDH notes its flu data isn’t as comprehensive as other reportable diseases because the department doesn’t request every case of influenza because it would overburden both MDH and health care providers. Therefore, the actual totals are likely higher than what MDH reports.
Flu activity remains low in Minnesota and most of the U.S., with only Georgia and New Mexico experiencing moderate or high flu activity levels.
