MDH reports 695 new COVID-19 cases, deaths rise to 614

Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Health reported there are 695 new cases that have tested positive for COVID-19, creating a total of 12,494 cases in the state.

MDH has also reported 614 total deaths, with 23 additional deaths reported Monday. Of that total, 501 have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, MDH reported.

The department stated, as of Tuesday, the state has completed 15,229 tests and private labs have completed 105,605 tests. Gov. Tim Walz had stated his goal was to test 5,000 people a day. According to Tuesday’s report, the state surpassed that mark Monday, with MDH labs testing 278 people and private labs completing 4,775 tests. It had also previously eclipsed the mark on May 6.

Of the total hospitalizations, 496 patients were reported hospitalized Tuesday. Of those hospitalized, 199 were in the ICU. The total number of ICU hospitalizations in Minnesota, since March 19, reached 1,799 Tuesday.

According to MDH, 8,223 patients no longer need to be isolated. MDH is now reporting that the number of patients who no longer need isolation represents individuals with confirmed COVID-19 who no longer need to self-isolate, including those who have died.

As of Tuesday, according to case data from Johns Hopkins University, total COVID-19 cases in the world have amassed to 4,201,921. Of the total cases, 1,347,936 are in the United States. The data shows 286,835 people have died from the virus in the world and 80,684 have died in the United States.

Minnesota testing ranks 24th in the United States.
