St. Paul School Settles with Parents of Transgender Child in Alleged Discrimination Case

A St. Paul charter school has reached a settlement with a family over claims of gender-based bullying.

Last year, David and Hannah Edwards said their child was bullied while attending Nova Classical Academy. Their child was born a boy but is now living as a girl.

At the time, school officials said they had recently adopted a resolution of support for gender identity and expression among the school’s students.

The complaint, meanwhile, prompted other parents to voice concerns that they were uncomfortable with school faculty discussing transgender issues with their children.

In addition to a $120,000 payout, Nova Classical Academy representatives have agreed to revise the school’s policies and practices to support transgender and gender-nonconforming students.
