MDR: Over 115K stimulus checks for Minnesotans still unclaimed

More than 100,000 Minnesotans who may be eligible for a $1,200 stimulus check from this spring have still not claimed them, the Minnesota Department of Revenue (MDR) said Tuesday.

According to MDR, the IRS recently sent letters to nearly 116,000 Minnesotans urging them to register for the Economic Impact Payment, which you can do so here. The deadline is Nov. 21.

"The Economic Impact Payments were sent out to try to spur the economy and help Minnesotans during an uprecedented time," MDR Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly said. "We want to make sure that those Minnesotans who may benefit the most from these payments know how to claim them or are connected with groups that can assist them."

MDR said those who haven’t yet received a stimulus check are those who didn’t file a return for either 2018 or 2019, typically because they’re very low income and aren’t required to file a return.

Some taxpayer assistance groups in Minnesota that can help people claim the payments include:

  • University of Minnesota Law Schoool Low Income Taxpayer Clinic: 612-625-5515 or lawclinic@umn.edu
  • Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid Low Income Taxpayer Clinic: 612-334-5970
  • Prepare + Prosper: 651-287-0187
