UPDATE: Police: Man in custody after attempted armed robbery and police pursuit near Richfield
A part of westbound Interstate 494 was closed temporarily Wednesday morning after a police pursuit in the area.
KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said the interstate was closed at Interstate 35W early Wednesday.
According to the Richfield Police Department, the pursuit began after a suspected armed robbery happened near the intersection of 77th Street East and Portland Avenue South, in Richfield, at about 9:08 a.m.
According to police, a man attempted to rob another man at gunpoint. A physical altercation ensued and the handgun discharged, but no one was hit, police said. The man who attempted the robbery ran to his vehicle.
Officers in the area heard the gunshot and searched the area, finding the man who attempted the robbery quickly driving away from the scene.
Officers pursued the vehicle onto westbound I-494 where it crashed with another vehicle near I-35W. The driver of the suspect vehicle was apprehended and the handgun was found at the site of the crash.
The apprehended driver was taken to the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center, where he remains.
