Former Holy Family coach charged in sexual assault of former student

A former coach at Holy Family Catholic School in Victoria has been charged with criminal sexual conduct.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office said school officials were notified on Sept. 4 that a former student had been sexually assaulted by a tennis coach beginning at some point in 2015. The school immediately reported the allegations to law enforcement and an investigation began.

According to the sheriff’s office, the coach was identified as 59-year-old Timothy James "TJ" Garin, of Mound.

Deputies learned Garin sent text messages complimenting the victim’s appearance and detailing desired sexual activities. He also allegedly touched the outer clothing covering the victim’s buttocks, legs and groin area, and sent the victim pictures of his genitals while requesting nude pictures from the victim.

Tuesday, authorities arrested Garin. He’s charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and remained in Carver County Jail as of Wednesday.

His next court appearance is set for Oct. 23.

The sheriff’s office said Garin’s employment at the school has been terminated.
