Masks not a must to vote inside, but voters could face a fine

This year, more Minnesotans are expected to vote absentee than ever before but many are still choosing to vote in person.
For those planning to vote in person, there are several new guidelines, especially when it comes to wearing a mask. For instance, if there’s someone who simply refuses to wear a mask, poll workers have a plan in place that was discussed months ago.
"This wasn’t a snap decision," said Risikat Adesaogun, spokesperson for the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.
Adesaogun said if someone needs a mask, they’ll provide one. If a voter simply doesn’t want to wear a mask inside, they can vote curbside.
"Historically, most Minnesotans have used curbside voting if they have a disability or other mobility issue but it’s really an option for any voter who chooses," Adesaogun said.
If someone refuses curbside, declines to wear a mask and wants to vote inside, technically, they can.
"We cannot deny any Minnesotan voter their right to vote. We can’t deny any voter their chance to make their voices heard in the ballot booth," Adesaogun said.
But not wearing a mask inside comes with a consequence for breaking the state’s mask mandate.
"Poll workers on site will take your name and that information will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities," Adesaogun said.
Some voters don’t mind the face coverings.
"Taking it seriously isn’t even that big of an inconvenience to put a string around both your ears so I don’t think it’s that big of an ask," said Richard Fox, a voter from Minneapolis.
While voting this year may look and feel different, there’s no shortage of options to make sure your vote gets counted.
"Making it as safe and convenient and easy for people is really paramount in this election," said Adam Reinstein, a voter who lives in Minneapolis.
State officials said they’ve sent these guidelines to all cities across the state so they should know what to do if an incident comes up.
So far, they haven’t had any issues, including during primary voting. For any questions about voting, click here.
