Death of 2-year-old child ruled homicide in Mankato, teen arrested

The city of Mankato said on its website Thursday that a recent death of a 2-year-old child has been ruled a homicide and an arrest has been made in relation to the case.

The child died on Eastport Drive on April 16. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially ruled it a homicide.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Wednesday near his home on the 500 block of North Fifth Street. He has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held in a secure juvenile facility as of Thursday afternoon, the city said.

According to a release, public safety officers responded to a medical incident at 4:38 p.m. on April 16 on Eastport Drive. A 2-year-old was brought to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The case remains under investigation. No further details are available at this time.
