What’s that smell? KSTP meteorologist says it’s farmers spreading manure

That not so sweet smell of fall across the Twin Cities is unfortunately what you might have thought it is: manure.

It is harvest time across Minnesota, and after farmers have harvested the crops, they then go back and cover the field with manure.

The manure adds nutrients and is an excellent fertilizer.

Sometimes under certain weather conditions, especially a temperature inversion when the temperature is warmer a few thousand feet above the ground, we get the not-so-sweet scent trapped and hovering over the ground.

Wind and cooler temperatures aloft will help break up the smell.
