As the pandemic continues, distance learning seems to be likely to continue as well.
In part due to the continuance of distance and hybrid learning, AmeriCorps is looking for tutors statewide to help students virtually with their learning.
The company says it needs 50 reading and math tutors who can work remotely.
"What we say for reading corps and math corps is as long as you have an interest and passion in working with kids we can provide the training and support that you need to be successful," said Andrew Mueller, director of Talent Acquisition at AmeriCorps. "So really that minimum expectation is that you’re interested in supporting our learners across Minnesota. And, of course, as a virtual tutor having familiarity with some of the virtual platforms that you might need to uses to provide that virtual tutoring. and some of the basic internet requirements, right, to be able to connect."
He went on to add that since the tutoring is virtual, tutors don’t need to live in the same area of the state as the families they’re tutoring. All applicants need is 18-25 hours per week to commit to tutoring. Tutors will get a $465 stipend every two weeks.
Another benefit tutors qualify for is up to $2,300 at the end of service terms to repay federal loans or to help with future education.
"Those moments where they’re really engrossed in what they’re learning and you’re helping them … it helps you as a person just see what you can do. I mean, kids are like sponges they’ll want to learn more from you and it’s really humbling," said Reading Corps tutor Crystal Sutton.
