Ramsey County commissioners have voted to delay a key decision until next week, as leaders look for solutions to a growing homeless problem.

The board of commissioners met Tuesday to discuss leasing Bethesda Hospital from M Health Fairview, near downtown St. Paul.

The board delayed the final vote but the work on the project will continue throughout the week.

During this time, the county will continue to hear concerns from the neighborhood. The board recognized safety and security have been some of the main questions from a lot of residents.

This new timeline will give board members an opportunity to explain the process in more detail, as well as get feedback.

The proposal was made public on Oct. 5 as Fairview Health Services announced significant systemwide changes.

The proposal included moving COVID-19 patients from Bethesda Hospital to St. Joseph’s and allowing Ramsey County to lease the facility for a homeless shelter.

Tuesday, the board of commissioners talked about the urgent need for housing with winter approaching.

The shelter would provide beds on a referral basis. Those experiencing homelessness would be able to use an individual room for multiple nights.

Officials say the hospital would need few changes to adapt to the new use. It already has restrooms, showers, a kitchen and dining facilities, among other essential needs.

A vote is expected at next week’s regular board meeting. If approved, the agreement would run from Dec. 1 to May 31.
