Minneapolis City Council unanimously approves ‘Indoor Village’ project to help house those experiencing homelessness

The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved funding for the Indoor Villages project to help house people experiencing homelessness Friday.

According to the city of Minneapolis, the Indoor Villages project will be a low barrier shelter for those experiencing homelessness.

The project consists of 100 tiny shelters that will be located inside a warehouse. Every resident would have their own individual living space.

The project is designed to be COVID-19 compliant as it allows for more social distancing and provides personal space for the residents. It also serves to make people feel more comfortable than staying in a traditional shelter.

Just under $2 million was allocated to the project which is expected to open before the new year.

The money to fund the project is coming from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The team running the Indoor Villages project is currently in negotiations to lease a private space in the North Loop neighborhood.
