Richfield man pleads guilty to making false bomb threat at Mall of America to deport wife

A Richfield man pleaded guilty Wednesday to making a false bomb threat at Mall of America.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 62-year-old Vincent Togbe Konney entered his plea in U.S. District Court Wednesday.

Court documents state, on Aug. 13, 2018, Konney wrote a letter falsely accusing his wife of being part of a plot to bomb Mall of America. Using a fake name, he then sent the letter to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service in retaliation against his wife, who was in the naturalization process at the time.

The attorney’s office said, in the letter, Konney claimed he was riding a bus when he overheard two women discussing a plot to blow up MOA. He further claimed that one of the omwn dropped her Social Security card and her permanent resident card and he enclosed it with his letter and a copy of his wife’s real permanent resident card.

He ended the letter by urging the government to halt a "terrorist threat" by deporting his wife, the attorney’s office said.

His sentencing date will be set at a later time.
