I-35W Bridge to turn teal and orange Wednesday night for Latino Heritage Month

The Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis will be lit teal and orange Wednesday evening to commemorate Latino Heritage Month that started Tuesday and lasts until Oct. 15.

According to the city of Minneapolis, Latino Heritage Month recognizes Latinos’ significant contributions to the United States.

Tuesday, the first day of Latino Heritage Month, was significant because it marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16 and Chile on Sept. 18.

There will be no public celebrations of Latino Heritage Month due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, volunteers from ¡Somos! will be at a Powderhorn Park food distribution event Sept. 25 to help Latinx community members complete the 2020 census.

The city of Minneapolis has a list of activities for Latino Heritage Month and a guide to Latino restaurants, arts studios and businesses here.
