Ticket sales for Twin Cities concerts, sporting events signal a return to normal

U.S. Bank Stadium announced a new concert date for one of country music’s biggest stars.

George Strait will perform on Nov. 13. The show was previously scheduled for July. For the venue, they’re thrilled that it’s a step towards normal.

February 2020 was the last major event at U.S. Bank Stadium when fans gathered for Monster Jam.

"It has seemed at times like a lifetime ago," said John Drum, GM of U.S. Bank Stadium for ASM Global.

Drum said he was thrilled with Friday’s announcement about George Strait.

"We couldn’t be happier. All of us have missed this so much, but we don’t want to rush back into it. We want to pick the time that we feel we can really do this correctly and safely," Drum said.

Sports fans are also back in Twin Cities stadiums. Earlier this month, spectators filled a portion of the seats for Twins, Wild, and Timberwolves games.

"We’re crawling out of it," Ticket King President Michael Nowakowski said.

Nowakowski says finally there are events they don’t have to issue refunds for.

"It was really nice to have some clarity and to know that certain events were going to take place," Nowakowski said.

Nowakowski says based on simple supply and demand, there could be a hike in prices on the secondary market, especially if the Wild make the playoffs and as the weather warms up for the Twins.

"If it’s reduced capacity at some level this summer, I expect prices to be very high for the Twins," Nowakowski said.

For music lovers, Nowakowski is also seeing promoters target dates into the fall with hopes of bigger crowds, rather than being forced to postpone again.

"I think they’re kind of just throwing a safe date out there," Nowakowski said.

As for how many Vikings fans will be allowed to fill U.S. Bank Stadium this season, Drum says they’re reliant on state health officials to make that call.

"The bottom line is when we open our doors again we want people to come in and focus on just having a great time. And we’ll prepare the venue and our staff to make sure we can do that in a safe fashion," Drum said.

There are other shows on the calendar this year at U.S. Bank Stadium, but Drum says those are out of their control because the tours of those artists will decide if the show goes on. For anyone with tickets to a postponed concert at U.S. Bank Stadium, they are still good for the rescheduled date or you can request a refund.
