Community demands answers in the killing of Nia Black

St. Paul police officers marched in the streets Saturday alongside a family who is seeking justice for the killing of 23-year-old Nia "Brooklyn" Black.

Police believe more than 50 people were at the scene where Black was shot June 13 outside the Lamplighter Lounge in St. Paul, but investigators still do not have any leads on her death.

"I wish I could stand before you and give you an update, but we don’t have an update," St. Paul Police Department spokesman Sgt. Mike Ernster said. "We have no idea because nobody’s coming forward."

Latanya Black, Nia Black’s mother, pleaded for someone who was at the scene of the shooting to aid in the investigation.

"There were 50 cameras out there. Somebody has to know something," she said.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter — whose city has seen an increase in violent crime this summer — also attended the march to call for peace.

"If you’re gonna say you’re down with community, you’re part of the community, the only way is to end these cycles and help solve a crime," Carter said.
