Sturgis rally still a go in South Dakota, as many as 250,000 people expected to attend

The 80th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is still scheduled to start this weekend, despite COVID-19 concerns. The rally draws thousands of bikers to Sturgis, South Dakota from across the country. More than a week of concerts and events are planned to entertain the crowds.

Monday afternoon, Minnesota health officials said they are concerned about Sturgis, considering how many Minnesotans typically ride across the border to attend the event in our neighboring state. In fact, they expect a possible spike in cases as a result.

The event is expected to draw as many as 250,000 people.

Tom Dabrowski from the Twin Cities will not be one of them. He’s been to Sturgis every year for the past 30 years, but says he is staying home.

"When there’s that many people, you can’t socially distance," he said.

Gordy Aune Jr., a member of the Masonic Motorcycle Club International Minnesota Chapter 24, also says he prefers to wait until next year.

"The way the world is right now, it’s not a good idea to go out there," he said.

Sturgis city officials say they are making modifications to make the event safe.
