Woman killed in ATV crash in Paul Bunyan State Forest
A woman died after an ATV crash in the Paul Bunyan State Forest this past weekend.
According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical personnel were called to a remote area on Thorpe Tower Forest Road at about 3:26 p.m. Saturday.
An investigation shows 38-year-old Cassandra Berg, of Crosslake, was driving a 2010 Polaris 500 northbound on Thorpe Tower Forest Road when she hit an embankment and lost control, flipping the ATV and pinning her underneath it.
Another rider in her group turned around after losing sight of her and found her unresponsive. He then began CPR until first responders arrived and took over, according to the sheriff’s office.
After efforts to revive Berg, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said Berg wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time, and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
An investigation remains underway.
