A Flint, Michigan man who was involved in a hit-and-run that injured a teenager in Edina earlier this year was sentenced on Friday.

Court records indicate Carlton Troutman was given a stayed sentence of 45-month (just short of four years). Additionally, he will have to complete a year in the Hennepin County workhouse. However, Troutman has served about a third of that time.

According to a criminal complaint, at about 8 a.m. on Jan. 23, Troutman took his friend’s car, along with two other passengers, and began driving aggressively. Around 8:10 a.m., the vehicle struck 17-year-old Kyla Avant while she was boarding a school bus at France and Halifax avenues in Edina.

Police said Troutman was driving the car around the bus on the right shoulder of the road, partially on the sidewalk, when he struck Avant. According to a criminal complaint, the student forcefully hit the windshield and was thrown 50 feet as Troutman sped away from the site of the crash.

Avant was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Troutman was arrested in Michigan on March 13 and brought back to Minnesota on March 26.
