Man charged in South St. Paul shooting that killed 1, injured another

Police have charged a Newport man in connection to a shooting in South St. Paul that killed one person and injured another.

A criminal complaint states 35-year-old Jerome Deshawn Misters faces one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree attempted murder.

According to the complaint, officers were called just before 4 a.m. Monday to the 600 block of 17th Avenue North on the report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found two men who suffered gunshot wounds. One of the men, identified as Matthew Perkins, was later pronounced dead.

According to a witness, Misters had gotten into an argument with Perkins over the phone. The witness said when Perkins and the other victim arrived at the house, Misters ran outside.

The woman said as she was still in the house, she heard three gunshots.

The complaint says, "She looked down the street and observed Misters standing over Perkins and shooting him in what the officer interpreted as execution style."

Misters was set to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
