Pedestrian in Minneapolis hit-and-run crash dies

A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle early Monday morning in Minneapolis has died, according to a police spokesman.

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder, emergency personnel responded to a car versus pedestrian crash at 2:20 a.m. near the 600 block of Franklin Avenue West.

A person at the scene flagged down the officers and directed them to the victim. Officers and fire personnel aided the victim before he was rushed to the hospital in "grave" condition, Elder said.

Preliminary investigation shows the victim was walking to his car on the south side of Franklin when the suspect vehicle hit him, pinning him between the cars. After the suspect vehicle sped off, the victim became airborne and landed in the street.

Late Tuesday night, police were notified that the victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, had died.

Homicide detectives are investigating the case.

"We are asking people to step up and do the right thing. We need your help," Elder said.

A friend identified the victim Wednesday night as 31-year-old Idris Yussuf, which the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed. The friend said Yussuf is survived by his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
