Judge: Attorneys for former officers charged in Floyd death not to discuss case with media, public

A Hennepin County judge has issued a gag order in the cases of the four former officers charged in the death of George Floyd after attorneys spoke with the media about the case.

In the order, Judge Peter Cahill said pretrial publicity "will increase the risk of tainting a potential jury pool and will impair all parties’ right to a fair trial."

The order requires that attorneys for either party refrain from discussing information, opinions, strategies, plans or potential evidence with the media or the general public.

The move comes after "two or more" of the former officers spoke with the media Tuesday. Earl Gray, who is representing Thomas Lane, spoke with KSTP-TV about his motion to dismiss charges against Lane, as well as evidence being used in the case.

Lane has been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. J Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao face the same charges. All three have been released from jail on bond.

Former officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen in video with his knee on Floyd’s neck, has been charged with unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
