Girls Hoops: Elk River outlasts STMA for Section 8AAAA title

After a slow start, Elk River outlasts St. Michael-Albertville 56-51 to win the Section 8AAAA championship on Friday night in Elk River.

The Elks’ Elly Bauer shot lights out from the outside. She led all scorers with 22 points as Elk River earns its first trip to the state tournament in four years.

Coming into the game, the Knights were only one game above .500, but gave the Elks a run for their money. The game was within 8 points for much of the night. St. Michael-Albertville cut the lead to one point with three minutes remaining in the game but could never take the lead. Elk River always had an answer down the stretch with Bauer and Ellie Maass hitting big shots.

Now Elk River (19-1) will await the seedings of the state tournament that begins next week.
