Q&A: Gophers swimmer Max McHugh reflects on winning 100 and 200 breastroke national titles

Max McHugh won two NCAA championships over the weekend, becoming the first ‘U’ swimmer since 1964 to do so. The junior captured the 100 and 200 breaststroke titles.
We caught up with McHugh, via Zoom on Monday, to reflect on the special weekend that was.

McHugh dominated the finals of the 100 breaststroke on Friday with a time of 50.18, improving his best time by 0.01 to remain fourth all-time. McHugh won ahead of Florida’s Dillon Hillis (50.96).
Then, as an underdog Saturday in the 200 breaststroke, McHugh toppled favorite, California’s Reece Whitley, with a time of 1:49:02.

McHugh won the Big Ten Championships in the 100 breaststroke in 2020 and was an All-American in 2019 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Now, he gets to stake claim to being a national champion.
