Boat destroyed after getting caught in St. Croix River dam

A boat was destroyed but nobody was injured after it got caught in a dam on the St. Croix River Wednesday night.

North Hudson police said dispatchers received a call at about 7:09 p.m. that a boat was stuck in a dam that controls water flow from Lake Mallalieu into the river. Authorities responded and found the boat on the St. Croix River side of the dam.

At about 7:25 p.m., authorities learned both people from the boat had exited safely and were on the catwalk portion of the dam.

Police said the occupants told police they’d been fishing on the river using only a trolling motor when the backflow from the dam pulled the boat toward the spillway.

The boat later capsized during attempts to remove it from the spillway, police said. It’s believed to be a total loss.
