Neighborhood group 'frustrated' by lack of development around Allianz Field

It's been nearly four years since the St. Paul City Council paved the way for the new soccer stadium, Allianz Field, home of Minnesota United FC. Still there is little to no redevelopment at the 34-acre site, which includes Midway Shopping Center.

The Union Park District Council Land Use Committee met in late December with Minnesota United team owner Bill McGuire and the District Council's Executive Director Brandon Long. Long told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS McGuire urged neighbors to be "patient."

"Mr. McGuire was great to meet with us and update us on what's happening," Long said. "But it is a little frustrating nearly four years later to not have any projects started on the site because that's what was promised when this thing was approved by the city."

In minutes of the meeting, McGuire is quoted as saying there "could be something in the ground next year…millions have been spent on plans, planners, architects and lawyers…and if the Midway Center redevelopment came to fruition, it would be about $850 million."

Long said the ongoing discussions are important and helpful, but the lack of visible progress is concerning, especially if part of the plan includes apartments at the site.

"Right now there is talk of hotels, apartments, restaurants and additional parking," Long said.  "But nothing that includes affordable housing, which is critical for this neighborhood."

KSTP reached out to Minnesota United for comment and response, but have not yet heard back from the team.
