Bail for former Minneapolis police officer Chauvin set at $1.25M

Monday, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin made his first court appearance and had his bail set.
During the hearing, which Chauvin appeared at virtually, a judge set his bail at $1.25 million without conditions or $1 million with conditions, KSTP’s Eric Chaloux reports.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree and third-degree murder, as well as second-degree manslaughter, in the death of George Floyd.

In a video that circulated online as well as in charging documents released after Floyd died on Memorial Day in Minneapolis, Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes as Floyd lay handcuffed on the pavement.
Three other former officers involved in the fatal arrest were taken into custody and have been charged.

Chauvin’s next court appearance is set for June 29.
An attorney for Chauvin told KSTP, "I am not commenting at this time."
