COVID-19-positive inmate at Faribault Correctional Facility dies
An inmate at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Faribault who was positive for COVID-19 died earlier this week, the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) confirmed on Thursday.
According to the DOC, 43-year-old Adrian Raymaar Keys was hospitalized on Monday and died at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Two other inmates remain hospitalized, one of whom is in critical condition, according to the DOC.
Keys and several other inmates at the Faribault Correctional Facility had tested positive for COVID-19 on June 4, the DOC said. According to the DOC's website, as of Thursday, 201 inmates had confirmed cases at the Faribault facility, in addition to four staff members and one presumed staff case. Another 3,154 cases have tested negative at the facility, the website states.
A total of 334 inmates and 61 staff members at Minnesota correctional facilities have confirmed cases of COVID-19, the state website said Thursday, with another 38 presumed cases in inmates and 10 presumed cases in staff members. Four staff members have been hospitalized, all of whom have since been released.
A medical examiner is determining whether Keys died of COVID-19, which would be the first confirmed death of an inmate in Minnesota from COVID-19.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Keys," Minnesota DOC Commissioner Paul Schnell said. "Since the start of the pandemic we've worked to take all reasonable steps to minimize the introduction and spread of COVID-19 in the state's correctional facilities for the well-being of those we serve and our staff."
