The drive in the northwest metro is about to look a bit different as a major traffic shift goes into place Tuesday night.

While three lanes of traffic will remain open on Interstate 94 from Rogers to Maple Grove this construction season, crews are getting ready to separate the eastbound lanes between Highway 101 and Interstate 494. Be prepared for lane widths to be reduced to 11 feet. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is warning drivers about waiting until the last minute to choose a lane.

"We want everyone to know, you know, if you’re coming from the west, that you’re going to need to make some decisions if you’re exiting into Maple Grove or taking 610, you need to think about that before you get to Rogers," Dave Aeikens, spokesperson for MnDOT, said.

Drivers will need to stay to the right in order to exit at Highway 610, Maple Grove Parkway, or Weaver Lake Road in Maple Grove. All other drivers can use the left two thru lanes. The new configuration will stay in place through 2020 while crews rebuild eastbound I-94. Work will begin on the westbound lanes next year. Learn more about the project.
