Eagan mayor sentenced to year of probation after driving drunk, crashing in January

Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire has been sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to driving drunk following an afternoon of drinking and watching a Minnesota Vikings playoff game.

On May 8, Maguire submitted a petition to enter a guilty plea to the charges, but the sentence was not immediately made public. As part of the plea, court documents state he was convicted of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, while a gross misdemeanor DWI charge was dismissed.

A criminal complaint states an Eagan police officer responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in a snowbank at Dakota Path and Shadow Creek Curve at about 8:03 p.m. on Jan. 11. When the officer arrived on the scene, Maguire was in the driver's seat.

Eagan mayor arrested, charged with DWI

The officer noticed the scent of alcohol and saw Maguire's eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slow and slurred, the complaint states. Maguire failed the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and refused other field sobriety tests. At that time, the officer went to place Maguire under arrest, and Maguire needed help walking to the squad car, according to the complaint.

It also states a breath test revealed he had a BAC of .19.

According to the city's website, Maguire served as a city council member from 2003-2007 and is now in his fourth term as Eagan mayor. His current term runs until 2022.
