VIDEO: Officials say more resources, curfew led to success Saturday night

Saturday night, Gov. Tim Walz and state officials discussed the state’s response to protests and unrest in the Twin Cities.

"We know it’s going to be a long night, it’s early still," Walz said. "There is a lot of work to be done and I want to thank all those folks that are out there making sure they maintain that peace that’s expected of them."

Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen said the National Guard is in a "position of strength" that is than previous nights. Jensen said there are at least 10 ongoing missions the Guard is involved in.

"We are fully integrated and unified with law enforcement, fire, emergency management systems and all of our state agencies to ensure the safety of our citizens in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding communities," he said.

Commissioner for Minnesota Department of Corrections Paul Schnell, who was assisting the Department of Public Safety, said officers went out to enforce curfews that went into place.

"There is a large presence of law enforcement throughout Minnesota," Schnell said.

He added, "We know that some of the groups that are here are in this for the long-haul. Based on that, we know that it’s early, we don’t want to get to a point now where we’re overly confident. We feel like we had a really good start to this operation but the ultimate goal is, as was mentioned, first and foremost to preserve life, second to preserve property."
