Gov. Walz requests major disaster declaration for Minnesota

Gov. Tim Walz on Sunday sent a letter asking President Donald Trump to issue an expedited major disaster declaration for Minnesota.
The declaration would authorize emergency measures, including federal assistance to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Federal emergency funding would help cover costs for crisis counseling, food, medical assistance, legal services and hazard mitigation.
Minnesota could also be reimbursed for the activation of an emergency response center, National Guard costs, law enforcement and mental health support.

“The State of Minnesota responded quickly to this public health disaster and continues to do so to the fullest extent possible,” Walz said in the letter.

As of Sunday, 29 patients have died from COVID-19 in Minnesota, and there have been 935 total confirmed cases.
