17-year-old boy dead following shooting in Minneapolis
A 17-year-old boy is dead after a shooting in Minneapolis on Monday night.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS is at the scene of the shooting on East 25th Street and captured crime scene tape as well as several squads in the area around 10 p.m.
The Minneapolis Police Department on Tuesday told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the shooting occurred outside of the boy’s residence around 7:13 p.m.
While standing outside the residence with others when shots were fired.
The 17-year-old ran inside the house and collapsed.
When officers arrived, they said the boy was inside the residence and had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
They attempted life-saving measures at the house, but the boy died.
Loved ones identified the victim as 17-year-old Myron, who was supposed to go to prom and was on track to graduate this year.
His mom, known as “Rah Rah,” explained he had obstacles but pushed through.
She told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she doesn’t know if the shooting was random but has no idea who could have done it.
“My whole world has been taken from me. It’s upside down,” the victim’s mother said.
This south Minneapolis mom left her home Monday night for groceries, but had no idea she spoke to her son for the last time.
“I’m kind of lost now. I don’t know how I’m going to be strong for my other children,” she said.
His mom said she got a call about the shooting and rushed home.
Witnesses told her he went outside to take his dogs out when he was shot in his back.
“He was just coming into being a young man. He was loving and caring with a big heart,” she said. “I just pray for all those that are feeling the pain I’m feeling with the loss of him. My son wasn’t supposed to end up on a t-shirt.”
The residents in this south Minneapolis neighborhood called the area a magnet for crime and drugs.
“Dealing with all the homelessness and being on a fixed income, there’s not too many options. You can’t really be in a safe place,” the victim’s mother said. “We deal with endless people, not caring, not being mindful that there are other people around and that their actions affect the neighborhood.”
No arrests have been made at this time, and investigators are still working to determine what happened leading up to the shooting.
“Another act of gun violence and another juvenile shot dead,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “This senseless act of gun violence has destroyed another young life and left another family with a life of grief. We are asking anyone in the community with information to help our investigators by providing any information they have about this incident. We all must work together to end this level of violence in our neighborhoods.”
