Federal Bureau of Prisons to close, ‘deactivate’ several prisons, including in MN and WI
The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced Thursday that it will permanently close a federal prison in Dublin, California, as well as deactivate several prisons across the country — including in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The FCI Oxford Satellite Camp in Oxford, WI, and the FPC Duluth facility in Duluth, MN, will be deactivated.
FBOP attributed the closure and deactivations to “several significant challenges, including a critical staffing shortage, crumbling infrastructure, and limited budgetary resources.” It added that it and the DOJ have asked for additional assistance multiple times and recently offered a proposal to Congress.
Employees impacted will move from one part of the facility to another part of the same facility, or have opportunities to move to a different FBOP facility.
Inmates at the Duluth facility will be moved to other institutions and employees will be moved primarily to the prison facility in Sandstone. The Duluth facility has an aging infrastructure, including buildings that have been condemned due to contaminants such as asbestos and lead paint.
The inmates at the Oxford satellite camp will be moved to other institutions and employees will be moved to the prison itself.
