Risk of wildfire creates new burn restrictions in northeast Minnesota

Burning restrictions have been implemented in northeast Minnesota due to the risk of wildfires.

Koochiching and the northern half of St. Louis counties in northeast Minnesota began burning restrictions on Friday morning. Authorities say that Cook and Lake counties remain under the same burning restrictions.

The Minnesota DNR says that wildfire risk increases with sustained warm and dry conditions. They state that fire danger will likely remain high until the state receives significant rain.

In Cook, Lake, Koochiching and the northern half of St. Louis counties:

  • Burning permits will not be issued or activated.
  • No campfires are allowed in dispersed, backcountry, backpacking and remote areas. Campfires are only allowed in established fire rings and homes, cabins, campgrounds or resorts.
  • No fireworks are allowed outside the city limits.
