Minneapolis police said a suspect has been arrested after a deadly hit-and-run crash killed one teenager and sent five other people to the hospital.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the situation unfolded before 12:23 a.m. Saturday near Fifth Street North and Hennepin Avenue.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said teenagers and adults in their 20s were brawling on the sidewalk when one person involved in the fight got into an SUV, backed up down Hennepin Avenue and drove through the crowd of more than a dozen people before driving away.

Six people were injured in the crash and were sent to the hospital.

One person, a 16-year-old girl, later died at the hospital. A 29-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. Two 14-year-old girls and two men, ages 24 and 28, are expected to survive, police said.

Family members identified the girl who died as De’Miaya Broome. Her mother, Andrea Mitchell Broome, said De’Miaya had recently transferred schools from Spring Lake Park High School to the Minnesota Internship Center and had hopes of one day becoming a nurse.

“And she was so excited because she said, ‘Momma, I’m finna turn my life around. And I’m finna do right by you, and I’m finna graduate, and I’m finna be the best,'” Mitchell Broome said.

“They took my baby away from me,” Mitchell Broome told reporters. “My baby was love. She loved people, she loved animals. Anybody that was helpless, she wanted to help them. And I wasn’t even there to help her.”

Loved ones remembered De’Miaya as a girl who cherished her family. Her family says she loved to draw and was a favorite of her nieces and nephews.

Now, they’re searching for answers as to why this young woman’s life was cut short.

“I want you to know that we do desire justice, and I’m saying it like this: This young lady, my niece, didn’t deserve this act. She didn’t,” said De’Miaya’s uncle, Andrea Mitchell. “My sister didn’t deserve to go through this, neither did my mother.”

“I just want to know why?” Mitchell Broome said. “Why this girl did this to my baby and took her from my family?”

“Please just show any blessings and pray for my family, and we just thank you,” Mitchell added.

The woman who reportedly drove into the crowd began driving out of the downtown area and was followed by a witness. O’Hara said officers acted on tips from 911 callers and were able to arrest the suspected driver on the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North.

Latalia Anjolie Margalli, 22, was booked into custody on suspicion of murder. She is being held at the Hennepin County Jail.

Public records show Margalli was driving with a suspended license and has had her license revoked several times.

O’Hara called video of the incident “absolutely horrific.”

“There aren’t words to describe how tragic and senseless it is to lose a 16-year-old female over something like this,” O’Hara said. “However, we are thankful because it’s clear we could have had more fatalities and more people injured.”

Police say they are still investigating the motive behind the crash.
