Teenage driver fatally hits 7-year-old riding bike in Greenfield
Authorities say a 7-year-old boy was struck and killed by a teen driver while riding his bike Friday night in northwestern Hennepin County.
According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was riding down Greenfield Road near Ingram Street in Greenfield around 8 p.m. when a 17-year-old driver hit him. Paramedics gave the boy first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to release the victim’s name.
A search warrant application obtained by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS states responding officers found the bike under the front tires of a Honda Accord that the 17-year-old was driving.
In an interview with investigators, the driver said he had been texting with someone while he was in the driveway of his home and “immediately after” leaving the driveway, but he said he was not on his phone when he was turning right from Ingram Street onto Greenfield Road, the warrant states.
A Hennepin County sheriff’s deputy applied for a search warrant on the Accord to access the teen’s cell phone — which is believed to still be inside the vehicle — and find out “if and/or when [the driver] was on his cell phone proceeding the incident.”
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash.
