Volleyball coach from Minnetonka federally indicted on child pornography charges

Twin Cities area volleyball coach Dorian Christopher Barrs, of Minnetonka, has been federally indicted on enticement of a minor and child pornography charges, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Barrs was indicted on four counts of production of child pornography, one count of receipt of child pornography and four counts of coercion and entitlement of a minor, a press release from DOJ says.

Over the course of nearly a decade, between October 2014 and March 2024, court documents say that Barrs used social media and text messages to have conversations with minor girls that were sexual in nature along with other types of sexual abuse, according to court documents.

According to the indictment, Barrs’ 5 victims were between the ages of 15 and 17. In an effort to identify more potential victims, court documents say some of the girls Barrs’ solicited were as young as 13.

The indictment says Barrs was a volleyball coach in Minnesota from 2020 through early 2024. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned he was an assistant coach at Maple Grove High School from fall 2020 to the fall 2023 and is no longer employed there.

“It just makes me so angry. Yeah, I feel duped,” said one mother whose daughter plays volleyball. “He was like a family friend of ours. I trusted him to coach my daughter.”

One mother who wanted to keep her name private says Barrs is very well known in the volleyball community. She adds he also coached at a popular volleyball club, Minnesota Select. While her daughter isn’t one of the identified victims in the indictment, she has advice for all parents.

“I keep asking myself, ‘What I could have done differently?’ Maybe I trusted him too much but you know somebody for many years and you do think you know them but clearly in this case we did not know who he was so I would say always stay involved.”

The Department of Justice District of Minnesota says that law enforcement is still working to find and confirm victims in this case.

Barrs made an initial court appearance in federal court on Wednesday.
