An Owatonna High School cheerleader died over the weekend after she was injured in a crash involving a Minnesota State Patrol squad car in Rochester.

Olivia Flores, 18, was a passenger in a Ford Focus that collided with a State Patrol squad car as it was turning left across U.S. Highway 14 toward Apache Mall around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, according to the Rochester Police Department.

After the initial impact, the Focus was pushed into a Toyota RAV4 that was waiting to turn right onto Highway 14, causing the RAV4 to land in a ditch, police said.

Five people were taken to St. Marys Hospital for treatment: Flores and two other women inside the Focus, ages 19 and 21; and the two occupants of the squad car, State Trooper Shane Roper and a 20-year-old man who was riding along. Flores later died at the hospital, police said.

Flores was captain of the cheerleading squad, and she even got to share that part of her life with her brother — a football player — on Friday nights. The high school senior was due to graduate next month.

Her coach and teammate were overwhelmed when they found out Flores died over the weekend.

“It’s really sad knowing in the next three weeks we won’t see her at graduation, and she won’t be at my grad party and I won’t be at her grad party,” said Mariah Cuellar, one of Flores’ cheer teammates.

Jenna Compton, Flores’ cheer coach at Owatonna High School, said she was a “shining light” who left a positive impact on her community.

“So many lives were touched by her, and it’s not just the cheer world,” Compton said. “Pretty much anyone that has reached out to me, even if they didn’t know her real well, said, ‘Oh, I have just heard so many wonderful things about her.'”

Loved ones have started an online fundraiser to support Flores’ family.

The Minnesota State Patrol released a statement extending its condolences.

“Making sure motorists are safe as they travel Minnesota’s roads is at the core of what we do each day. Our agency works hard to prevent crashes and save lives,” State Patrol Col. Christina Bogojevic said in a statement. “On Saturday evening, a Minnesota State Patrol squad was involved in a crash in Rochester in which someone later died. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event.”

The Rochester Police Department is investigating the incident.
