Separate afternoon shootings leave 2 dead in Minneapolis
Minneapolis police are investigating separate shootings that killed two people Thursday afternoon.
The first one happened just after noon in the city’s Near North neighborhood.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, officers were called to Morgan Avenue near 12th Avenue on a reported shooting. There, officers found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
O’Hara says officers provided aid before the victim was taken to a hospital. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner on Friday identified the man as Di’Jon Chase Legore-Banks, 32, of Blaine. He had been shot multiple times.
Based on initial information, investigators believe the incident started as an argument that escalated, which led others to get involved. At some point, gunshots were fired.
O’Hara says police believe the people involved knew each other.
Then, at around 2:15 p.m., officers were called to an alley in the area of West Lake Street and Blaisdell Avenue in the city’s Whittier neighborhood on a report of an overdose and, instead, found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, O’Hara says.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. On Friday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as 27-year-old Abdirizak Mahamed Abader of Mankato.
Investigators believe Abader could have been associated with a nearby homeless encampment.
The encampment is just a block from the intersection of West Lake Street and Blaisdell Avenue. Tents are right up against the side of the Park Square Condominiums.
“They’re vandalizing that wall,” said Raymond Hoffman, the president of the complex. “Scares the daylights out of the families. There’s drugs, you can see the paraphernalia.”
According to Hoffman, about a month ago the city cleared the group from the Kmart parking lot across the street.
“They walked across the street and parked themselves on our property, right in front of the police, right in front of the city,” he said.
The city asked his security team to participate in an effort to remove the group on Thursday morning, according to Hoffman. He said, however, the displacement was cancelled at the last minute.
Hours later, police responded to the shooting.
“I really wish we had gotten rid of that encampment,” said Hoffman, who is asking the city to take action. “If we had gotten rid of it, this would never have happened.”
Both homicides are under investigation and police haven’t yet made any arrests.
Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
