1 injured in New Brighton shooting, suspect now in custody
Police say an 18-year-old is in the hospital after he was shot in the back Thursday afternoon in New Brighton.
According to the New Brighton Department of Public Safety, an acquaintance shot the victim on the 200 block of Old Highway 8 Northwest before running off to the northwest.
Initially, police said the victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with unknown injuries. However, in a late-night update, police said the victim is expected to survive after receiving prompt medical care by the responding officers, staff at Hennepin County Medical Center and Allina Health Emergency Medical Services.
Efforts to find the gunman with a perimeter search, including the use of drones and K-9s, ended at 11:30 p.m., when the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office arrested as 24-year-old man on the 300 block of Old Highway 8 NW. He has been brought to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center.
The arrested ended an hours-long search, which caused multiple businesses in the 400-500 block as officers closed the highway at dinner time in order to search for the suspect and process the scene.
The suspect was described as being a 6-foot-tall man with a thin build who was wearing black shorts and a bright blue hoodie. Anyone who might have seen someone matching the gunman’s description and has photographic or video evidence to share is asked to send an email to city@newbrightonmn.gov.
