Sources: Possible sound of gunshot inside squad prompts police response at Ramsey County Jail
There was a large law enforcement response outside the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center Friday night after officers said they heard a loud noise that could have been a gunshot.
St. Paul police took a man in his 40s into custody on Friday night around 6:30 p.m. on the 2000 block of Marshall Avenue because he was in a bathroom of a gas station and refusing to leave.
While officers were bringing the man to the garage of the jail to be booked, they heard a loud noise which they believed to have possibly been a gunshot, according to a spokesperson for the St. Paul Police Department (SPPD).
Officers took cover and tried to communicate with the man in the car, but he was not cooperating, officials say. Additional law enforcement was called in in case the man had a gun.
After 90 minutes of using drones and less-lethal tools, officers approached the car and took the man out of the vehicle. He was brought to Regions Hospital to be evaluated.
No firearm was located, a spokesperson for SPPD said. The squad car was towed and is being looked at by investigators, in addition to body camera video and CCTV footage.
The man was booked on probable cause trespassing and obstructing the legal process. No additional charges related to what happened in the garage were added at the time of booking, officials say.
