1 dead, 5 injured after fire in Alexandria, 2 first responders treated and released
One person is dead and several others are injured after a fire Wednesday morning in Alexandria.
On Friday police identified the man who died as 20-year-old Chance GiGuere. He was living at the home where the fire occurred with family.
Authorities from several agencies responded to a fire on the 1000 block of Jefferson Street at around 6:35 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a news release from Alexandria Police Chief Scott Kent.
Police say they learned that six people lived in the home. Inside, they found a man dead.
Five others were taken to a hospital, three by a medical helicopter, and two were later treated and released.
On Friday, Chief Kent said that of those five people, three are adults who were taken to a facility that specializing in burns and smoke inhalation. Their condition is unknown. Two school-aged children were treated and released from the hospital on the same day as the fire.
The department added that an Alexandria police officer and a Douglas County deputy also were hurt during rescue efforts. They both received treatment but were later released.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation as of Friday, but police were able to specify that it started on the main floor of the home and GiGuere was found upstairs.
The public was asked to avoid the area of Jefferson Street at Ninth and 10th Avenues, which were blocked off earlier in the morning. It’s unclear how long they’ll remain closed.
