Person dead after shooting in St. Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood
A person has died following an overnight shooting in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood of St. Paul.
St. Paul Police confirmed on Tuesday that Drew Johnson, 35, died in the shooting.
St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster said officers were called to a home along Englewood Avenue between Hamline Avenue North and Syndicate Street — just down the block from Horton Park — at around 1:45 a.m. Monday.
The 911 caller, a woman, reported an intruder. Ernster says she named the person she claimed was an intruder but it’s still unclear if they knew each other. After a bit, a man got on the phone and reported that multiple shots had been fired and the alleged intruder was down on the porch of the home.
A short time later, dispatchers got another 911 call from a man who said he was dying. That call traced back to the area of the intrusion that had just been called in, Ernster said.
When officers arrived, police say they found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds on the front porch. He was taken to a hospital where he died hours later.
Ernster says the man and woman inside the home were taken to police headquarters for questioning but declined to talk. At that time, they were booked into jail on suspicion of murder.
Investigators are still trying to figure out how they knew the man. His identity and cause of death will be released by the medical examiner at a later time.
Ernster added that police don’t believe there is any threat to the public.
It’s the 32nd homicide of the year in St. Paul.
