The two men who died on Sunday morning have been identified as 24-year-old Jamartre Micheal Sanders and 24-year-old Bryson Lamarr Haskell by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

Minneapolis police say two men in their 20s are dead and another is injured after “an altercation” escalated into gunfire inside a tobacco store around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

The injured man, also in his 20s, was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound, but he is expected to survive. Officials say he was one of three employees inside the store where the shooting happened.

Officers responded to the corner of 4th Street and 14th Avenue Southeast in Dinkytown for reports of gunfire inside a store after an altercation between two groups of customers.

In an update Sunday afternoon, police said the injured employee did not fire any of the shots.

Despite the shooting happening within walking distance of the University of Minnesota campus, police said they do not believe any of the people shot are University of Minnesota students.

“Parents are right and students are right to be concerned,” said Minneapolis Police Department Sergeant Garrett Parten. “But anywhere in this city, this is concerning.”

Investigators are still working to determine how many people were involved in the shooting, Sgt. Parten added.

News of the double homicide investigation shocked U of M students headed for a Sunday morning cup of coffee a few storefronts away in the heart of Dinkytown. A sign in the window of the Starbucks said it was “closed for safety.”

“I’m really shocked,” said Andrea Milosavljevic who lives nearby. “I don’t know if there’s anything I can do with this information to prepare myself. I’m just like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.'”

“I can’t believe that this is going on in Dinkytown, across from Blarney’s [Pub & Grill],” said student Will King. 

“Every student goes to Blarney’s every single weekend. It’s crazy.”

“And luckily, last night, we evaded danger, like 15 minutes before that [happened],” added senior Mei Cassidy-Heekin. “But we were out right across at that bar,” she continued, pointing to the Irish pub.

“It is hard to hear,” said U of M parent and Campus Safety Coalition Board Member Marcia Cotter.

“And I think a lot of parents are sort of concerned as to why this smoke shop is open at 2:15, 2:30 in the morning,” she continued. 

“I think that’s a concern of a lot of parents.”

“We get called out here, but not for this violent of a crime,” Sgt. Parten said.

Shots-fired calls are trending down around Dinkytown, he said. Regardless, “there is a continued focus on safety in and around campus,” he added in a statement Sunday afternoon. “Addressing gun violence and the harm that results from it is our highest priority.”  

No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.
