Event raises money to support families of children with autism

Before its shops were open on Sunday inside Southdale Mall, the retail center hosted the 20th annual Steps for Autism in Minnesota.

Around 1,000 people took part in the state’s largest annual autism resource fair. 

Along with it being an event that’s safe and inviting for people of all ages with autism, it’s also a time for friends and families to get the resources needed to best live with autism. 

“Autistic people do need more support. We do need to improve our systems to make sure people are better supported in education, community living [and] employment,” said Ellie Wilson, the Autism Society of Minnesota’s executive director. 

“On the other hand we also want to make sure whenever we talk about autism we’re talking about the incredible power, talent, skill, and culture that comes from within this community,” Wilson added. 

She said the money raised at the event will stay local and give families who have children with autism, and adults who live with it, the help and opportunities to thrive.
