Historic Black church turns 100 years old in North Minneapolis
Worshipers gathered at a North Minneapolis church for a very special Sunday service — marking its 100th year.
Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church is a historic Black church in the Shingle Creek neighborhood in Minneapolis.
The church was founded 100 years ago by Elizabeth Stevens. Her family says descendants of freed slaves made up the original congregation.
“It means a lot to me because this was our great, great grandmother and it’s an acknowledgment to her,” said Kimette Almon, who attended the celebration with her cousins on Sunday.
Almon brought black and white photographs from the early days of the church — including some of her great-great-great-grandmother.
The family said that the church established its roots on the outskirts of town because back then it was the only area that was welcoming to the Black community.
“Our family was quite influential,” said Almon about how the times have changed since the early days of the church.
Church leaders hope to pass the baton to keep the church running — and continue its rich history — for the next 100 years.
