Attempted abduction alert issued by U of M

The University of Minnesota Public Safety issued an alert regarding an attempted abduction Sunday night.

According to the alert, the attempted abduction happened at about 6:07 p.m. near the intersection of Eighth Avenue SE and SE Eighth Street.

The suspect was described as a 40-year-old bald man, who was about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was wearing a black shirt.

The alert said the suspect tried to grab a victim from behind. The victim fought the attacker off, according to Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder.

University of Minnesota junior Omena Giles said she was walking in the area Sunday evening around the time the event occurred.

"I was on the street probably 20 minutes after it happened, and you can't help but think, 'That could have been me,'" she said.

This is the third attempted abduction in the same area in the last six months.

The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating the case.

The first event occurred in September near Fourth Avenue Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast. The second incident occurred in February at 10th Avenue Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast.
